HAVE WE A GOAL?

From the November 1963 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Is there a solution for the problem of lack of purpose so prevalent in society today? Many persons and organizations are giving serious thought to finding an answer to this question. Anxiety, frustration, futility, and unrest do not promote a happy, successful way of living for the individual, nor do they promote progress for a nation.

It is generally agreed among those best informed on this subject that regardless of the loving help offered by another, each individual must eventually find his own purpose in life. Each person must gain some measure of self-esteem, each must see his inherent value, each must find his own conscious worth. Once an individual becomes convinced that there is a specific place and purpose for him, he willingly makes the effort to discover what it is. The work entailed in the achievement of any goal makes it imperative that the goal be the highest and most worthy one obtainable. What is the best goal for each one?

A study of the Bible in the light which Christian Science throws on it will provide the needed answer. It is the spiritualization of one's thought. The first chapter of Genesis presents the spiritual record of creation. Some of the spiritual facts given in this chapter are that God created the heavens and the earth; that God created man in His own image and gave man dominion over the earth; that God's work is finished; and that everything He made is very good.
