Gratitude for Christian Science and a strong desire to join the Church of Christ, Scientist, freed me one Sunday afternoon of the smoking habit, which had held me in bondage for over twenty years. Several months previous to this healing I had been awakened to the power of the Word by a brief visit to a Christian Science Reading Room. Here a few words of truth, spoken by the librarian, replaced a deep sense of grief for a loved one, who had just passed on, with a spiritual joy and purpose for living such as I had never before known.
As I began studying the Lesson-Sermon, set out in the Christian Science Quarterly, and attending church, many inharmonious conditions began dropping away, such as tension, headaches, sleeplessness, a nasal condition, and bursitis of the shoulder.
But I was still continuing to smoke, excusing myself with the thought that it was just an appetite like eating sweets. Knowing that Christian Scientists do not smoke, I was always careful to remove the cigarettes from my purse when I went to church. One Sunday I forgot. When the collection bag was passed I opened my purse, and to my embarrassment there were the cigarettes exposed to view.
