Testimonies of Healing

It is with deep gratitude for our religion...

From the June 1965 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is with deep gratitude for our religion that I testify to its healing and protecting power. How very much we owe to Mrs. Eddy for her tireless effort in presenting this understanding of God to the world! In the rearing of two children, I have found my religion an invaluable aid. Never a day passes but some discord is smoothed out, and I can say, "Thank You, dear God." I am grateful not only that Science has been available to meet the needs of our children but that through their questions I have had to dig deeper for a real understanding of its teachings.

We have had numerous healings of various natures. Our son was troubled with bad dreams at night when he was young. When I awoke to the fact that this was a difficulty to be met and mastered, he and I began doing prayerful work about it. Each night I would sit by his bed and declare spiritual truths to him, assuring him that there is only one Mind and that Mind is God, good, and that therefore he had no other mind that could think ugly things and disturb his sleep. The condition was met, and he was not troubled with bad dreams any more.

Several years later this same son was healed of a broken arm through the prayerful work of a practitioner. Both bones were broken just below the elbow but within an hour were perfectly set, as verified by an X ray which his father, not a Scientist, insisted upon.

Our daughter was healed of croup. It attacked her several times during the winters when she was one and two years old. The condition was quite severe; but each time it occurred it was healed immediately with the help of a practitioner, and finally it ceased to recur. Later the child was healed of severe attacks of abdominal pain entirely through the application of Christian Science.

One evening, while in the yard, I turned my ankle and fell with my full weight on that foot. The pain was intense, but I arose and walked into the house. The pain disturbed my sleep all night; but I prayed each waking moment, declaring that man, the spiritual idea of God, cannot be touched or controlled by accident or discord and that, as Mrs. Eddy tells us on page 475 of Science and Health, "Man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements." She continues, "The Scriptures inform us that man is made in the image and likeness of God."

On arising the next morning I could hardly put my foot to the floor. However, I did arise, prepare breakfast for my family, and later straighten up the house. I kept being grateful that I could attend to my household duties, even with difficulty. After finishing my work, I took the Bible and Science and Health and did some more studying. The pain left while I was studying, and although the swelling remained for several days, I was not inconvenienced at any time after this period of study. Later in the day I dressed to keep an appointment, put on my high-heel shoes, and walked in comfort.

The healing of grief at the time my dear husband passed on was a beautiful experience. I earnestly clung to the promise contained in Isaiah's declaration, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee" (26:3). As I consciously strove to turn from unhappy thoughts to Godlike thoughts, the healing came.

Let me take this opportunity to express my deep appreciation of my mother, whose earnest and consecrated study of Science helped to direct my footsteps in the right way. It was my privilege to attend a Christian Science Sunday School from early childhood. I am indeed grateful for membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, for activity in the branch church, including service as Second Reader, which greatly helped my spiritual progress, and for class instruction. I know without a shadow of a doubt that Christian Science can and will meet every human need when rightly applied.—
