Outward Symbols Disappearing

From the December 1966 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Sincere students of Christian Science seek to gain a clear view of the meaning of the birth of Christ Jesus and the impact of his birth upon past ages as well as upon the present. This holy birth in Bethlehem long ago was a quiet event. Its momentous purpose was recognized by only a few God-inspired individuals of that day.

Today millions of men, women, and children throughout the world celebrate the season which has come to be called the Christmas season. But how far mankind has drifted from the simplicity of Bethlehem to the modern complexity and hullabaloo of the present Christmas celebration!

One of the great needs of Christianity is to return in thought and deed to a deeper, a more consecrated observation of this holy season. The mad revelry, as well as the careless gift giving going on during this season, is actually the antipode of the spirit of Christ, which Jesus came to demonstrate.
