The Spirit of Christ

From the December 1966 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The spirit of Christmas is the spirit of the Christ as set forth in Isaiah, "The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound."Isa. 61:1; Jesus referred to this message from Isaiah as the purpose of his coming (see Luke 4:18), and hence he directed us in the way of celebrating Christmas by imbibing the spirit of Christ.

Because the human mind has perverted and materialized the spirit of Christmas, this spirit needs to be redefined and reasserted so that the coming of Christ may be understood in its full meaning in this age. Imbibing the spirit of Christ has immense potential for the practical salvation of mankind. In the midst of megaton explosives, computerized civilization, and telescoped experience, the spirit of Christ stands out as the great need and the essential element that will save mankind from its own creations.

The Christ is variously referred to in the Bible as the Comforter, the Redeemer, the restorer, that which heals the ills of mankind, the way of salvation. The Christ reveals the nature of God as the divine Principle of man and the universe. It unfolds the nature of man in God's likeness. It enables one to understand the reason for his existence and to fulfill this purpose in his love for mankind. Jesus was the example, and he clearly defined the Christ in his healing and saving ministry.
