Before recording my experiences in Christian Science...

From the April 1966 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Before recording my experiences in Christian Science, I wish to speak of my love for The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, and my gratitude for the privilege of being identified with this unique demonstration of our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, the author of the Christian Science textbook. I am grateful for the Manual of The Mother Church and for the Lesson-Sermons, provided in the Christian Science Quarterly, the study of which is an educational process in Christian Science.

When I was a medically-minded young woman, I found myself as a bride in the midst of a family of Christian Scientists, and I wish to pay tribute to their faithful obedience to the Rule for Motives and Acts in the Manual, despite my tacit resistance to Science. The Rule begins (Art. VIII, Sect.1): "Neither animosity nor mere personal attachment should impel the motives or acts of the members of The Mother Church. In Science, divine Love alone governs man." Their forbearance helped to pave the way for me to ask for Christian Science when I needed it.

My complete indifference to this truth lasted for seven years. In fact, my only reason for turning to it was to avoid a miscarriage which the obstetrician said was imminent. After hearing the details of the problem, the practitioner assured me that God supports all of His ideas because "underneath are the everlasting arms" (Deut. 33:27). The healing was instantaneous, and in due time the child was safely born.
