New Birth Through Spiritual Awakening

From the April 1966 issue of The Christian Science Journal

At one time a student of Christian Science came to the realization that it had been her privilege to grow up in a home where Christian Science was the prevailing thought but that the birth of the Christ, Truth, in her own individual consciousness could come about only through her own clarity of thought and her own practical demonstration of this Science. As years passed and her sincere desire to know more of God deepened, she found that the new birth was taking place daily in her experience.

When she was a child, a subtle suggestion of a dual existence had crept into her thinking. When expressing good, she had been told, "You are God's little girl today"; and when not doing the things she should, she came to feel in her heart that she was error's girl. As she awakened to this true conception of spiritual existence, her own identity as a child of God became more evident in her human experience. It was shown in a purer sense of love and a deeper and stronger faith. In this newborn understanding of divine sonship, she was fulfilling Paul's words, "Be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and . . . put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness."Eph. 4:23, 24;
