The Authority of the Manual

From the April 1966 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the seventh chapter of Luke we are told of a centurion whose servant "was sick and ready to die." Luke 7:2; An officer of the Roman forces, the centurion knew the effect of authority. He was accustomed to giving orders and receiving immediate compliance. But when his faithful servant fell ill, he knew that his power was insignificant in comparison with that of Christ Jesus. The centurion felt he was not even worthy to go to the Master or to have him enter his home. But he acknowledged that the Christ, which Jesus expressed, constituted irresistible spiritual power. He realized there was no resistance to the Christ, Truth, and he gained the help he sought when he evidenced his humility and faith.

This Roman officer, lacking the proper authority himself, had the good judgment to seek aid from one who faithfully followed God's commands and who thoroughly understood the spiritual authority of divine Principle.

Christian Science teaches that God, divine Principle, governs the universe through spiritual laws. His laws are ever active, always enforced, without opposition. The effect of their operation is harmony, order.
