The Christian Scientist Respects God's Law

From the April 1966 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science deduces a momentous truth from the perception that law originates in God. It reasons that since God, infinite Mind, is the sole creator, man must be God's likeness, His idea. Therefore it concludes that it must be man's true nature to respect God's law. Real man, the expression of God, can never be a lawbreaker; he shows forth obedience, love, and respect for law. This fact, says Christian Science, underlies and supports—indeed, it prompts —all human efforts to base society on lawfulness.

To prove the fact that man is by nature law-abiding requires the student of Christian Science to examine carefully and frequently his sense of what he means when he uses the word "man." He has learned that the so-called mortal man is not real; that mortal man is just a convenient term for describing a misconception. He knows that the totality of mortality and evil amounts only to false thought, or spiritual ignorance. He knows that God the lawmaker is and must be reflected by man, His law-abiding idea. He consecrates his life to the proof that this is so.

How wonderfully far-reaching this proof may be is indicated by our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, where she writes, "As you work, the ages win; for the majesty of Christian Science teaches the majesty of man." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 188; If one is to prove that man is forever obeying God's law, it is necessary to identify oneself correctly as God's man. It is also necessary that he identify all others in this way. And such work can never be accomplished superficially; it calls for the utmost dedication to the idea of God's allness; it calls for yielding progressively to this idea throughout the range of daily life.
