It is with much gratitude that I look back on my youth and realize what understanding my parents exercised in not requiring me to follow either of their religious beliefs. I experienced a feeling of void, though, whenever I saw my friends attend their churches and Sunday Schools and I could not participate. This left me free when, several years later, I chose Christian Science as my religion.
At the time I entered high school, I found much comfort in reading Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, as well as copies of The Christian Science Journal and the Christian Science Sentinel. I attended a branch church regularly on Sundays and benefited greatly by it.
With what I imagined to be a very small understanding of this religion's teachings, I enlisted in the Army shortly after the outbreak of World War II. During my basic and specialized training periods, I was sustained by the study of the weekly Lesson-Sermon as outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly.
