Ushering—A Service of Joy

From the November 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Whoever accepts the duties and privileges of an usher in a Church of Christ, Scientist, is identifying himself with the Cause of Christian Science. Accordingly, he will find that this activity uplifts and blesses him in all his affairs.

Ushering is a joyous and satisfying means of expressing one's gratitude to God in loving service. But it is more than that. It is also a demand to bring one's thoughts and actions into complete conformity with Truth and Love, to bring "into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ,"II Cor. 10:5; as the Bible expresses it.

Ushering is not an activity of only a few hours a week. Nor is it merely a process of showing people to their seats in a church edifice. Good ushering includes a constant watchfulness that detects and rejects erroneous suggestions as quickly as it welcomes the thoughts that will glorify God.
