Uncovering Hidden Forces

From the August 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One great function of Truth is to uncover error. Christ Jesus, who brought Truth to earth in its perfection of power and proved its possibilities for mankind, implied this when he said, "There is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known."Matt. 10:26;

This saying could concern matter, which has baffled mankind for ages. Matter is obviously the opposite of Spirit, or God, being destructible and the basis of evil. In the natural sciences, it is significant that since the discovery of Christian Science, the Science of Truth, a more accurate explanation of the nature of matter has been uncovered even within a physical frame of reference. With this better comprehension of matter, many limitations that stemmed from ignorance of its constituents have been broken down. Now humanity is enjoying greater freedom in many directions than it has known before. Further analysis of matter and the bringing of material forces under the control of intelligence are steps that must precede its final disappearance.

In considering the effect of Truth upon human ignorance, we should remember that Mary Baker Eddy discerned what matter is from the standpoint of physics even before the natural scientists did. For instance, she says in the textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, "We tread on forces."Science and Health, p. 124; She made this discovery before it was known that matter can be reduced to energy and is interconvertible with it. But she went farther than the natural scientists; she declares in the same paragraph, "Human knowledge calls them forces of matter; but divine Science declares that they belong wholly to divine Mind, are inherent in this Mind, and so restores them to their rightful home and classification."
