The Reading Room—A Light in the Community

From the August 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Christian Science Reading Room, as an integral part of the Church of Christ, Scientist, is designed to send forth a light that blesses all within its radius, embracing the community in universal Love. Its purpose is to make Truth available to all mankind; its mission—healing.

The Reading Room is representative of the authority and power of God, Mind, and the healing ministry of His Christ, the spirit of Truth, which Jesus manifested for all mankind. The Master's invitation, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest,"Matt. 11:28; should pervade the atmosphere of the Reading Room. In this holy sanctuary burdens can fall away, and pressures of a troubled world can be lifted through quiet study and meditation. The "poor in spirit,"5:3; those who recognize their need for spiritualization of thought, partake of the sustaining bread of Truth, the living water of the Word of Life, and the inspirational wine of Love. As sense is stilled, the healing presence of the Christ is felt, and visitors leave refreshed and inspired.

The authorized literature supplied in the Reading Room provides an overflowing source of spiritual nourishment for both newcomer and advanced student. The truth contained in the Bible, the writings of our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, and the periodicals, being unlimited and unconfined, extends its influence beyond the Reading Room to lighten the darkness of materiality. All these publications serve the same high purpose of bringing the message of salvation to men, and through this understanding comes healing of bodily ills, mental unrest, and adverse conditions.
