Holding Crime in Check

From the August 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is unusual these days to hear a news broadcast that does not include a report of some form of crime. Many are shocked by the number and nature of these reports but feel helpless to do anything to lessen the increasing crime rate.

It was not until a student of Christian Science was witness to a crime that she began earnestly to ponder Mrs. Eddy's words on the gradual but complete destruction of all evil. She writes: "During this final conflict, wicked minds will endeavor to find means by which to accomplish more evil; but those who discern Christian Science will hold crime in check. They will aid in the ejection of error. They will maintain law and order, and cheerfully await the certainty of ultimate perfection." Science and Health, pp. 96, 97;

The student decided she must understand how to help "hold crime in check." To help in this battle, she realized, it is necessary constantly to identify man as the perfect reflection of Spirit. She determined that each time she saw or heard of someone harboring evil intentions, she would replace this false, material concept with that of man made in God's likeness. Thoughts of impurity, greed, or violence are entirely foreign to the nature of the real man.
