Don't Force Your Treatment

From the September 1969 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A Christian Science treatment when properly given is the most potent therapeutic agent ever discovered. Through spiritual understanding and the focus of right ideas the omnipotence of divine Mind is brought to bear on human discord. Because of the mortally mental nature of all matter, including the mortal body, this correct spiritual knowing can make the necessary adjustments to body or circumstances and thus produce harmony.

This healing method is most effective when the healer, or practitioner, clearly recognizes the absolute allness and goodness of God, the totality of His power and presence, and then perceives the perfect wholeness of man's identity in and of this infinite creative Principle. This recognition need not be forced. The truth of God and man is present and operative now, and needs no help from us. It is self-enforcing, manifesting its irresistible power without stress or tension. Mrs. Eddy writes, "Christian Science silences human will, quiets fear with Truth and Love, and illustrates the unlabored motion of the divine energy in healing the sick." Science and Health, p. 445.

This, of course, is not to say that good metaphysical work makes no demands upon a practitioner. Far from it. An effective treatment doesn't just happen. It is the result of an earned spiritual perception —earned through much study, prayer, self-purification, and confidence gained from practical demonstration. But neither one's preparation for the healing work nor his giving of a treatment need be intense or labored. Infinite Mind, or divine Love, is the healer in every case, and one does his best healing work when he so silences self-will and egotistical assertiveness that pure and perfect Mind is seen to be the real healer and its omnipotent, restorative power is trusted in full faith and understanding. Mrs. Eddy leaves us in no doubt on this point. She writes, "That individual is the best healer who asserts himself the least, and thus becomes a transparency for the divine Mind, who is the only physician; the divine Mind is the scientific healer." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 59.
