The Forces of Good

From the September 1969 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Human history is a continuous saga of men's struggle against supposedly destructive physical forces over which they have generally had little or no control. In recent years scientists have made enlightened attempts to learn more about these forces to protect mankind from their untrammeled onslaughts. Today orbiting satellites reveal the secrets of gathering storms, delicate instruments foretell the approach of tidal waves, and sensitive seismographs record distant earthquakes. Yet scientists have been almost powerless to control these phenomena.

Christ Jesus lived in a world that would have to wait nearly twenty centuries to benefit from weather satellites and cloud seeding. Even so, he was the most scientific human who ever lived. The Master proved spiritual power to be superior to the most awesome forces of matter.

It was not advanced knowledge of meteorology or physics that enabled Jesus to still the tempest and walk on the waves. Rather, it was his awareness of the Christianly scientific facts that enabled him to see that all real forces are spiritual and that the heavenly Father unerringly and harmoniously controls them. And because he could perceive the Christianly scientific facts so clearly, he compelled baseless, ignorant, suppositional forces to conform to the truth of being. This truth is that divine Mind produces nothing but intelligent, harmonious action.
