The pride of place and power
Is nothing new;
In Bible times men vied
For honors, too.
The treasure stored, the barns
Piled high with grain;
The seat beside the host,
The goal to gain.
And then the humble Christ
Showed men the way
To higher joys; these still
Are true today.
The treasure stored in heaven
Beyond all loss,
The meekness of a life
Purged of its dross:
These are the tithes we bring,
Letting pride fall,
An offering to our God,
Father of all.
