Dissolving a False Sense of Self

From the September 1969 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Our experience, good or bad, is basically mental and the objectification of our own thought. Christian Science teaches us to look within our own thought to correct our experience. It shows us that as we spiritualize our thinking and bring it into accord with the nature and government of God, divine Mind, we realize more harmony and dominion.

The experiences of the past may seem to dominate the present until we realize that Mind's idea, man, has never been material. We should classify the false impressions of material sense as being without origin in the one Mind and therefore as unreal. As, through spiritual understanding, we nullify discordant, nebulous influences of the past and discard them, the self-willed and self-righteous finite beliefs of today more quickly dissolve. Mrs. Eddy writes, "As the crude footprints of the past disappear from the dissolving paths of the present, we shall better understand the Science which governs these changes, and shall plant our feet on firmer ground." Science and Health, p. 224.

What a joy it is to know that our God-given spiritual understanding, rather than some person, environment, or condition external to our own thought, determines our health, happiness, and success! When the dross passes from human consciousness through the purifying action of spiritual chemicalization, we recognize that Truth has wrought the transformation. And we "better understand the Science which governs these changes."
