Incredibles

From the March 1970 issue of The Christian Science Journal

People have a way of coining fresh, colorful phrases. Although minted in humor, these are often surprisingly accurate indications of the prevailing mental climate. "Would you believe" is currently bantered about, hinting the human mind's reaction of incredulity to the daily happenings of this incredible era.

But this offhand phrase has a thoughtful meaning. What we believe with conviction is the mental rudder steering our experience. Forms of incredible good and incredible evil are exposed to human view as never before. What shall we believe? What shall we disbelieve?

As hitherto unpenetrated regions of belief in psychology, physiology, geology, and theology are disturbed by the leaven of Truth, we behold a world in ferment. Would you believe the visible scum of accelerating vice or the invisible Truth bringing it to the surface? How shall we separate defrauding temporal beliefs from saving eternal understanding? In speaking of Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy says, "Science only can explain the incredible good and evil elements now coming to the surface."Science and Health, p. 83; And she continues, "Mortals must find refuge in Truth in order to escape the error of these latter days."
