In 1935, I was suffering greatly from depression brought on by various unpleasant events in my immediate surroundings. My unhappiness appeared to have reached its peak, when a family who were students of Christian Science came to visit me. They gave me some copies of The Herald of Christian Science (German Edition) with the recommendation that I study them as the one way of being freed from my mental difficulties.
I laid the Heralds aside, but a member of my family read them. He then asked me to borrow a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy for him from the Christian Science Reading Room, as he, being at work, was prevented from doing so himself. I obtained the textbook for my relative. I was so taken up with my condition at that time that I was completely unaware of how close God was to me.
On the following Sunday I was invited by this member of the family to accompany him to a Christian Science church service. I went with him. I shall never forget that Sunday. It was as if the gates of freedom opened to me. During the service something within me let go, and the awful depression fell away. I realized that the right place for my son and me was here.
