In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy states (p. 3): "Gratitude is much more than a verbal expression of thanks. Action expresses more gratitude than speech." I am deeply grateful to God, for Christ Jesus, the Way-shower, and for Mrs. Eddy for giving us Christian Science. I pray that my actions may prove my sincerity. I wish to tell how Christian Science has helped me over the past forty some years.
I was enrolled in a Christian Science Sunday School at the age of two, and in my early childhood had healings of enlarged tonsils, dogbite, and a feeling of inferiority. One of the first synonyms of God that came alive to me was "Love." One summer vacation I was feeling sorry for myself because the little Protestant church around the corner from my home was always having parties for their young members. I was tempted to go to this Sunday School just to go to the parties. The next Sunday I was in my own church and saw love being expressed by all, and I knew that this alone was enough for me. I had learned that divine Love satisfies and we can express it to others through reflection of God's attributes.
Mind was another synonym of God that my Sunday School teachers helped me understand. Very often I would have difficulty in my schoolwork, and limitations of my abilities were voiced by my public school teachers. These thoughts were always rebuked by my Sunday School teachers, and they helped me see that Mind was the intelligence that asked as well as answered the questions. Depending more and more on Mind and less and less on a human sense of intelligence, I was able to finish college, become a teacher, and in turn help other children to see their God-given ability.
