Up to the time of my introduction to Christian Science I had been exposed to the sufferings of both my father and mother to such an extent that I feared that a pain in any part of my body might prove to be something very serious. Then one day a friend visited our home, bringing with him proofs of his healings brought about through Christian Science. He left copies of the Christian Science Sentinel with us, and this was my introduction to this profound religion, which proved to be the beginning of a new basis for thinking. I experienced immediate freedom as I realized that I did not need to fear my body, since God was Mind and Mind was All.
A year later I married with the agreement that Christian Science would continue to be my religion and physician in raising our children. That was more than a half century ago, and as I look back through the years, I see the hand of God directing my way. Regardless of the immaturity of my understanding of God, it was always sufficient to meet my need when I relied completely on Him.
When my son was four months old, he was sick with flu. I was up with him day and night. On the sixth evening the Christian Science nurse who attended me at his birth came to see me. When she saw the condition, she sent me to bed and took charge of my son. In the morning she put him in my arms and said, "He is all right now," and so he proved to be. Indeed, God is an ever-present help in trouble.
