Some time ago I expressed my gratitude for Christian Science in a testimony in the Christian Science Sentinel. With the passing years so many blessings have come my way through a little understanding of this new-old teaching revealed to us by Mrs. Eddy that I feel the time has come once more to "magnify the Lord" (Ps. 34:3) in words I hope will encourage and help others.
About two years ago I severely injured my foot and broke my leg. I was alone, having just said good-bye to friends. The pain was intense, but declaring aloud the truth of my unbroken relationship to God, I was able to reach my home. I was shouting to myself that God could not allow accidents to happen and therefore, as His reflection, I was incapable of experiencing the effects of accident or pain, because there was neither intelligence nor life in matter.
Once I arrived home, my wife telephoned a Christian Science practitioner, and prayerful treatment was immediately and lovingly given me. The pain subsided, and I had a comfortable night. The practitioner was asked if it might be wise to bind the leg to keep it rigid, and I shall always remember her reply: "God requires no help from man or matter to make you whole; you are whole now." This was just the answer we needed; no dictatorial Yes or No, but just the firm but gentle reminder: "There is no power apart from God. Omnipotence has all-power, and to acknowledge any other power is to dishonor God" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 228). Another passage that helped me very much was, "Christian Science silences human will, quiets fear with Truth and Love, and illustrates the unlabored motion of the divine energy in healing the sick" (ibid.,p.445).
