There is a statement that has been proven many times in my experiences (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy, p. 167): "Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized." The most outstanding healing we have had in our home was brought about through this radical reliance in the spring of 1966.
Our daughter, then eleven years of age, was suddenly stricken on a Thursday. Since she did not respond to my immediate prayerful work, a Christian Science practitioner was called. By afternoon the child was better, and we dismissed the practitioner. However, the next day the symptoms returned, and it was necessary to call the practitioner for treatment. By Saturday we also had the services of a Christian Science nurse. The presence and help of the nurse did much to relieve the anxiety of my husband, who, although he attends our branch church regularly, has not made Christian Science his own. Though the child was very strong in her desire to have Christian Science treatment, and had relief from suffering, my husband requested that a medical doctor be called. I recalled the advice of my teacher, who was the practitioner when our daughter was born. She said, "This child belongs to your husband as well as to you. Try to respect his thoughts and wishes."
The practitioner and nurse withdrew from the case. When I called the doctor, I explained to him that I was a Christian Scientist and our daughter had been raised in Christian Science, but that her father was not a student of Christian Science and was deeply concerned. After the doctor made his examination, he came to me and said the child had rheumatic fever.
