The belief of so-called material laws regarding...

From the November 1974 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The belief of so-called material laws regarding age does not apply to man reflecting God. We found this out when we bought our last house a few years ago. The bank which held the mortgage wouldn't give us a loan because of our age, the age of the house, and our small income. However, we had made a deposit, and we knew there must be a way. We liked the house, and it wouldn't have been right to lose the money.

We realized that God is the giver of all good, and that no belief of age or lack could possibly hinder our progress heavenward or homeward, for home, heaven, harmony, is established in God. What we needed to do was to reflect more Godlike qualities of home, such as more order, cleanliness, simplicity, steadfastness, love, joy, harmony.

The way did open to us. The people who owned the house decided to carry the first and second mortgages for two years on contract. At the end of two years, after considerable repairs, we ourselves went to the bank with whom the owners were dealing and explained our situation, showing that we were able to make the necessary payments. The bank checked the house and converted the first mortgage. The previous owners would still carry the second mortgage, which meant we were faced with a ballooned payment at the end of three years.
