Homemaking—A Heavenly Vocation

From the September 1974 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Homemaking is not just being a housewife. Although household duties may take up much time and require loving attention, homemaking includes much more than the care and maintenance of a house. No woman who accepts the high calling of making and maintaining a home need think of herself as only a housekeeper.

Spiritually considered, just what is home? The Psalmist, praising the abode of Spirit, God, says, "Blessed are they that dwell in thy house."Ps. 84:4; So the Bible links dwelling place, or home, with the presence of God. The true expression of home, then, includes such God-derived qualities as peace, harmony, joy, security, order, cleanliness, kindness, unselfish affection. The home-maker who endeavors to abide in consciousness with these pure qualities of thought is cultivating a spiritual sense of home that makes it a potent force for good.

What are some of the demands of the vocation of homemaking? As with any occupation that involves human relations, of first importance is the ability to live and work in harmony with others. The basis for success is the fact that, as Mrs. Eddy tells us, "Harmony in man is as real and immortal as in music." Science and Health, p. 276;
