The Wise Man's Christmas

From the December 1975 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When the wise men of old followed a new star to Bethlehem, they were prepared to bestow upon the baby Jesus gifts appropriate to celebrate his arrival. Many people today celebrate the Christmas season with gifts, but a misunderstanding of the spiritual nature of Christmas has materialized the commemoration of Christ Jesus' birth, and some may wonder if there is any spiritual meaning left to the celebration. We can silence the false sense of Christmas with its materialism and turn our thoughts at this season to appropriate ways to celebrate the daily unfolding of the Christ-idea in our own consciousness.

The Bethlehem babe represented on earth the Christ, Truth, in a form men could understand. Christmas commemorates this appearing of two thousand years ago. And the same Christ, Truth, appears to us today in a form that each one can understand. A spiritual thinker spends time during the Christmas season deepening his understanding of this appearing.

What are the ways of a spiritually wise man at this season? One of them is to maintain an inner stillness. Materialism tempts one to rush around, entertaining, shopping, to be pressured by the commercialism of a false sense of Christmas. The glitter and tinsel of such a Christmas spirit bespeak the false concept many people hold of the season.
