God's Government Is Self-government

From the October 1976 issue of The Christian Science Journal

People commonly think of government in terms of man-made regulations. Christian Science challenges and inspires human thought by offering the propositions that God's infinite self-government is the fact at hand and that this fact is provable here and now.

Christ Jesus opened his public ministry with the gospel, the good news, that this is indeed the case. He called God's government the kingdom of heaven. He said, "Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."Matt. 4:17; In modern language, his words can be taken to invite all who hear to change their way of thinking from the basis that life is mortal and material to the premise that God is man's Life and that in reality man is therefore spiritual and immortal, governed perfectly by God.

Jesus illustrated his teaching by giving health to the sick, integrity to sinners, food to hungry multitudes. He raised the dead. For himself he more than once annulled limitations of time and space. Christian Science perceives in Jesus' works proof that reality is wholly spiritual, that man in reality exists forever as the expression of God's infinite self-governing creativity. Christian Science points out that Jesus used neither material means nor mental manipulation, but demonstrated the truth of being, exemplifying the spiritual ideal prophetically perceived as the Messiah, or Christ.
