Many of us have had the experience of coming face to face with a situation that challenged our faith in God, or good— perhaps a picture of pain, sorrow, immorality, economic disaster, or stifling fear. In each case the question was the same: "Am I able to stand firm and trust divine good in the face of suggested evil?"
Not so long ago I had such a confrontation. Disastrous storms were predicted, and then the warning sirens began wailing. To me this was frightening, for it was my first experience of the kind. In the midst of howling winds spiritual power seemed remote. And yet, because I am a student of Christian Science, I knew I had to turn completely away from the violent scene, shut out the clamor of evil, and realize the omnipresence of divine Love. I remembered Moses' words when the children of Israel were pursued by the horses and chariots of the king of Egypt and were "sore afraid." He said, "Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you to day."Ex. 14:10, 13; I did "stand still" and had the wonderful experience of seeing "the salvation of the Lord"; the winds subsided and our community remained untouched.
This experience made me deeply aware of the necessity for total trust on the part of those who have glimpsed something of the power of God. Whatever the threat to our safety or to our peace of mind, the need always is to "stand still," be quiet, trust omnipotent God, and see the manifestation of the power of Spirit. Our faith should be so strong, so stable, that it will stand firm at all times, never yielding when evil appears to threaten.
