Unity and Inspiration in Church

From the October 1976 issue of The Christian Science Journal

At a business meeting of a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, an expensive project was under consideration. Much diversity of opinion was expressed. Then a vote was taken that proved favorable to the project by a small margin. The membership next went on to discuss implementation. Again there was much disagreement.

At this point a member proposed the discussion be suspended and the members consider a motion expressing gratitude to God for successful completion of the project. He invited attention to the occasions when Christ Jesus thanked God in advance for hearing him. This motion was seconded and promptly passed unanimously.

When the membership returned to the original project, the discussion no longer went forward from the basis of the divided vote as to whether the project should be undertaken at all; instead the discussion went forward on the basis of the unanimous vote of gratitude to God for the project's completion. Agreement was quickly reached; the work was duly and satisfactorily completed.
