Mrs. Eddy asks in Science and Health (p. 206), "Does God send sickness, giving the mother her child for the brief space of a few years and then taking it away by death?" On the same page she answers, "Instead of God sending sickness and death, He destroys them, and brings to light immortality."
Four summers ago our little girl fell down a flight of stairs onto a concrete floor below. She was taken up unconscious by a neighbor. Her father and the kind neighbor rushed her to a nearby hospital. I seemed stunned by the incident and phoned a Christian Science practitioner, asking that she help us through prayer. After our conversation my thinking became clear and concise. As I followed my family to the hospital, I realized clearly that because God is the only, ever-present, ever-conscious Mind, our child could never lose consciousness.
At the hospital I had to replace every negative thought with the spiritual truth or scientific counterfact and release the child completely to God's care. A doctor was not available for some time, and I rejoiced in the fact that God, the only physician, is always on duty everywhere.
