As my last testimony appeared in the Journal of April 1958 I feel another is due.
I am grateful for continued progress in the understanding and demonstration of Christian Science. My gratitude would not be complete without special appreciation and thanks to the Bible Lesson Committee, whose work gives us so much joy and inspiration in our study. "Day by day the manna [falls]" (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 46.)
Some years ago I had an outstanding healing in the following circumstances. One day I agreed with my neighbor to share the work of resurfacing the driveway between our houses. This led me into some very strenuous labor to which I was unused. After eight hours of extreme physical exertion I seemed to be quite unaffected, and I agreed to continue the work the following day. However, after a bath and change of clothes I sat down to a meal and immediately felt very ill. I suddenly seemed to be completely sapped of all strength and energy. Excusing myself from the table, I went into another room and sank into a chair.
There I began denying the condition and affirming my spiritual, indestructible nature in God's likeness. All the time it seemed as though there were another nature, or mind, present and arguing with me. My affirmations seemed to be overwhelmed by a voice saying, "You have overstrained yourself," and "You have gone beyond the limits of your physical endurance." Finally I took hold of the arms of the chair, pulled myself to my feet, and declared vehemently, "I have been expressing the energies of infinite Mind, which never can be depleted!" And I 'added, almost shouting, "And you cannot answer me back!"
At once I felt the condition of my body changing. The feeling of exhaustion drained from me and left me as free and fresh as if I had just risen in the morning. I retired at the usual time and worked on the driveway all through the next day with no ill effects.
Since that experience I have found sustained physical exertion leaves me remarkably free of aftereffects. This confirms Mrs. Eddy's statement in Science and Health (p. 217), "When mentality gives rest to the body, the next toil will fatigue you less, for you are working out the problem of being in divine metaphysics; and in proportion as you understand the control which Mind has over so-called matter, you will be able to demonstrate this control."
My gratitude is also due the teacher of Christian Science from whom I had primary class instruction.
