An activity of ascending thought

Growing beyond human concepts

From the January 1978 issue of The Christian Science Journal

If an individual is demonstrating the healing Principle of Christian Science correctly, there inevitably come into his experience "signs following." These may take the form of friends, a happy home, rewarding work, and so on. Many people mistakenly think that the purpose of Christian Science is merely to harmonize human experience; once this purpose is attained—the belief goes—they can settle down to enjoy the comfortableness of a happy humanhood.

Of course it is right to have a happy, healthy life. Occasionally an individual may be tricked into thinking that human happiness isn't important because he is learning of matter's unreality. But the demonstration of Christian Science is an activity of ascending thought. This demonstration leads us from matter-based misery or pleasures, through the satisfactions of good humanhood, to the peaceful, Soul-inspired joys of true spiritual identity. Being happy as the result of demonstrating Christian Science indicates we are on the right path in our mental journey. Mrs. Eddy writes: "Pure humanity, friendship, home, the interchange of love, bring to earth a foretaste of heaven. They unite terrestrial and celestial joys, and crown them with blessings infinite."Miscellaneous Writings, p. 100;

A danger in our path is that in becoming overdelighted with the more spiritualized human concepts we are entertaining, we may find our spiritual progress coming to a halt. To be caught up in the pleasures of personal contentment with friends, family, church, wealth, is to be enslaved by the fleeting appeal of material conditions, usually without even recognizing one's captivity.
