Looking at world hunger—one writer's perspective

From the January 1978 issue of The Christian Science Journal

On January 12, the Monitor will include a special section on the problem of world hunger. In the following interview, a staff writer who worked on this project explains how a spiritual basis enables the individual both to understand this problem and contribute to its solution.

How did you, as a Christian Scientist, decide you could best approach the subject of world hunger?

For me, the biblical account of the Last Supper provided a natural starting point. After the disciples had eaten, Jesus provided a more important feeding and nourishing. Isn't this symbolic of the perspective we need? In addition to the first meal—providing the practical expression of care—we also need to know that man is actually cared for by God.
