Earned security

From the April 1979 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Most of us have felt insecure at times. Some look back longingly to the past. Others may feel scarred by trauma and disappointment. Many look to the future with foreboding. Whatever the circumstances, true security—derived solely from God, divine Love—can be realized here and now.

For many the study and practice of Christian Science is proving to be a sure way out of insecurity into a deeply meaningful life. The kingdom of God is within consciousness, as Christ Jesus indicated (see Luke 17:21), and can become the determining factor for the good in our lives.

How can this be achieved?

It should be comforting and reassuring to know that if scientific prayer, as explained in Christian Science, reveals more of God's reflected infinite goodness to one, it can reveal this to another also. The Scriptures assure us that "the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God."Eccl. 9:1;

True security is God's gift to man, the real man, who is expressive of God. The substance constituting true selfhood manifests the self-existent, eternal Being, God. Enduring happiness and usefulness are the outcome of God. This heritage of divine Love is included in each one of us. Through the application of Christian Science true security can be appealed to and relied on, regardless of the human situation.

Mrs. Eddy wrote these illuminating words in a sermon she delivered in Boston: "When we understand that God is what the Scriptures have declared,— namely, Life, Truth, and Love,—we shall learn to reach heaven through Principle instead of a pardon; and this will make us honest and laborious, knowing that we shall receive only what we have earned."Christian Healing, p. 8; Persistently identifying ourselves with God as His idea enables us to acknowledge true substance as already present in consciousness, indestructible according to God's law of reflection. Then health and well-being are realized to be as stable as their source. Through Science an understanding of the existent permanence of divine Love is brought to bear right where the illusion of insufficiency seems to be.

As the harmony that is natural to God's man is welcomed into our thought, we find freedom from anxiety. The condition of matter does not determine security. Divine Mind alone does this. Through demonstrating real being, we earn and win conscious unity with God. Fidelity to good, honesty, wisdom, unselfed love, industry—these open the door to genuine security.

We can be easily deceived into believing that materiality in some form gives security. Material conditions, however, are subject to change at any moment. Putting our trust in them does not give lasting peace. Making money or establishing a home does not ensure security. Entering into marriage does not guarantee happiness. But the consciousness that expresses the divine Mind—the real Mind of each one of us—is objectified in some recognizably harmonious way. The feeling of insecurity yields to acceptance of abundant good. A constructive job, a happy home, a secure marriage— any one of these is often the outward manifestation of regeneration.

We can insist that phases of human will, which keep us from enjoying the good that is really at hand, be uncovered and destroyed. Fear, selfishness, lust, lawlessness, all forms of disobedience, are elements of the will that blinds us to the existent riches of Soul—and that needs to be overcome with the Christlike qualities of being. When the spiritual requirements are met through the spiritualization of thought and life, true health, happiness, and security are experienced.

We should not murmur if establishing a change of base from mortal-mindedness to spiritual-mindedness seems like hard work. We need deep and spiritually alert dedication, sincere enough to respond successfully to the challenges of mortal mind so that real being is demonstrated to an ever-increasing degree. As we consciously reflect the self-knowledge and self-control of divine Mind, we destroy the mesmerism that makes a limited, material sense of identity seem so real.

Jesus gave us the recipe for true security: "If . . . God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith? . . . All these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you."Luke 12:28, 30. We limit ourselves when we look to people and things for security. If we put our trust in anything besides God and His idea, the result can be chaos.

Circumstance, injustice, revenge, can't really deprive us of the security to be found in divine Love. The law of Love governing us supersedes and makes of no effect every suggestion of mortal mind and matter that would separate us from the good rightfully belonging to us. Through Christian Science we awake to the abundant good we include as sons and daughters of God and achieve the present possession of this good.
