Man always in heaven

From the April 1979 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christ Jesus' resurrection after his crucifixion and three days' entombment was a unique event in mankind's awakening from the dream of substance, man, and life in matter. We in the twentieth century are continuing beneficiaries of his victory. It points to the provable metaphysical truth that man is not in a material universe and never departs from spiritual reality.

Christ Jesus' actual identity, reflecting divine Life, never went through birth, personal history, crucifixion, resurrection. Mary Baker Eddy tells us: "Jesus' true and conscious being never left heaven for earth. It abode forever above, even while mortals believed it was here."No and Yes, p. 36; That real man is always heaven-abiding is a fundamental truth of Christian Science. Easter should be a potent reminder to Christian Scientists of the link between Jesus' resurrection and individual living in this present age. The divine laws that he understood, and made concrete in his resurrection, are dynamic and permanent. A fundamental law is that regardless of appearances, man, Spirit's idea, never left Spirit for matter. He is never engaged, then, in returning to Spirit.

The importance of the events after Gethsemane is found not so much in the merely human sense of them as in their spiritual meaning. It is infinitely more significant, spiritually, that "'Jesus' true and conscious being never left heaven for earth" than that mortals believed that it did.
