At a time when I was taking five different kinds of medication daily, Christian Science was brought to my attention by a friend in Germany. I was awed by the account of his sister's healing through spiritual means alone. For the first time I glimpsed, unknowingly, the Christ presence, God's spiritual power touching human lives. In my consciousness a seed was planted, and the period of germination began.
One year later, while rehearsing for a musical comedy, I was suddenly hospitalized with pelvic thrombosis. After my life was considered to be out of danger, it became obvious that one leg was so affected I might not be able to walk normally. For a time I coped with deep despair.
After some recovery had taken place, one day an offer for a role in a TV show came through my telephone answering service. Changes were made in the script to accommodate me. Even though I was released from the hospital and did the TV show, X-rays showed there was no complete healing, and it was pointed out to me several times that my leg might have to be amputated. Nevertheless, I made my way to London. There my condition worsened, and the two physicians I consulted were at variance in their diagnoses.
