Forever intact, eternally whole!

From the June 1979 issue of The Christian Science Journal

All being is perpetually intact. God's spiritual creation is the only creation there really is.

Being is forever whole, just as divine Mind fashioned it. As the Psalmist proclaimed, "He commanded, and it stood fast." Ps. 33:9;

If the harmony of being could be invaded, there would be no omnipresent, demonstrable Principle, God. But throughout her writings Mrs. Eddy makes it clear that any interruption of His infinite harmony is impossible.

This, however, seems far from the case in what we term the material realm, which Christian Science reveals is but a misconception of reality. Here ceaseless changes are taking place; discords constantly interrupt the flow of daily living. But as one persistently acknowledges the intactness of being, of the spiritual, God-created universe, and denies the reality of the material universe, this spiritualizes his thought, making it increasingly impervious to the illusory reports of the material senses. Such an enlightened state of consciousness establishes greater concord in every aspect of one's day-to-day existence.

With absolute finality Mrs. Eddy asserts in Science and Health, "The harmony and immortality of man are intact." Science and Health, p. 521; It is because of our separateness from all that is material, evil, destructive, and our consequent immortality that we can claim and begin to demonstrate uninterrupted harmony for ourselves and others despite what the physical senses say to the contrary.

While basking in the sunshine on the beach, I was bitten by an insect. The following day my leg was badly swollen and very painful. With the aid of the Concordance to Science and Health I looked up references to "harmony," and I realized that it is impossible for me as the reflection of Spirit to lose my harmony because of any illusive, material circumstance. I saw that my spirituality and immortality exempt me from all evil. Throughout the day the pain and swelling lessened, and just before falling off to sleep that night, I gratefully thought, In the morning I'll be all right. Then I saw that this belief contradicted the truth of uninterrupted wholeness that I had clung to all day. With conviction I declared I was at that very moment the perfect child of God and always had been. I woke in the morning quite free.

The conviction of continuous, spiritual well-being was the Master's method of healing discords and remains the only possible basis on which his followers can heal. Christ Jesus did not see those who sought his help as mortals who had lost their physical wholeness and needed to be restored. He knew that man is spiritual and intact, that unbroken harmony reigns right where its opposite seems to be. Thus he was able to bring speedy release to sufferers. If wholeness were not the original and eternal fact of creation, spiritual healing would be impossible. Hence healing in Christian Science is accomplished by recognizing that absolute perfection is the continuing status of man and the universe, and that in reality there is neither a healthy nor a diseased mortal.

Because man remains the spiritual manifestation of the eternally perfect God, not for a single instant can his intactness be invaded. "The divine Science of man is woven into one web of consistency without seam or rent," ibid, p. 242; Science and Health states. This potent truth can destroy the belief there has been a breakage or dislocation and result in quick healing. Creation being spiritual, there is no matter to break; therefore there are no broken parts to be reunited. The prophet Isaiah must have glimpsed man's continuing spiritual wholeness when he gave the assurance, "Thine eyes shall see Jerusalem a quiet habitation, a tabernacle that shall not be taken down; not one of the stakes thereof shall ever be removed, neither shall any of the cords thereof be broken." Isa. 33:20.

In the so-called physical realm, relationships as well as health seem to break down, and a discordant relationship is often the underlying cause of ill health. The resolution of such problems demands a resolute turning away from the picture of two or more conflicting mortals to the recognition that in reality all people are spiritual ideas of God and forever dwell peaceably together, governed by their common source, divine Love. There is no such thing as spiritual disunity—only spiritual oneness, compatibility—because there is only one Mind universally expressed.

The understanding of the intactness of being is the remedy for every apparent lapse from perfection. If an interruption of harmony were possible, it would denote the inability or unwillingness of the God who is omnipotent, unfailing Love to preserve the wholeness of His creation. It is Love's very nature to maintain its own expression. The realization of this fact not only can heal strained relationships, disease, and injury, but can defend one increasingly against aging and death, for Truth is not too idealistic to be practical. And it can be so proved by anyone willing to put it to the test.
