For many years of our marriage, my husband had a severe drinking problem. Because of this, in our household harmony seemed the exception, and discord the rule. After I had spent years coping with this situation, with my husband in torment most of the time, I realized I did not have to live like that. It is the God-given right of each of us to live in peace.
As a practicing Christian Scientist, I had earnestly endeavored to see my husband's real selfhood as the perfect man of God's creating. Many times help had been asked of a Christian Science practitioner, and this kept the situation from becoming unbearable. I knew there was much love and kindness in my husband's true identity, although it seemed hidden by this error.
One day he informed me that he wanted to quit his habit but had not been able to. He felt certain a close family member, who is a class-taught Christian Scientist, would be willing to help him. He contacted her, and her prayer had immediate results. His awakening to his real nature as spiritual man was wonderful, and I thank God I could witness it. The healing of the drinking habit brought peace to our home for the first time in our marriage. My husband was also healed of high blood pressure and other physical limitations. This freedom came in a very short time, and it was a joy to be around him. In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy says (p. 307): "The divine Mind is the Soul of man, and gives man dominion over all things. Man was not created from a material basis, nor bidden to obey material laws which Spirit never made; his province is in spiritual statutes, in the higher law of Mind."
