Until Christian Science came into my life, I lived in constant fear. Although I had a husband and children, my life seemed meaningless, without reason or purpose. In 1970 doctors told me I had pernicious anemia with little hope of improvement. I was losing weight rapidly and on top of this had a nervous breakdown. I even attempted suicide. They placed me under the care of a psychiatrist, but this only confused me all the more, and the medical treatments were unbearable! In my darkest hour, I cried out to God for help.
Suddenly I remembered the book that a friend had given me over eleven years earlier. I went to the attic and dug it out of a box. It was entitled Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. I was so starved for comfort that I began reading it and continued for nearly three days. I discovered that God is Love; this meant that He loved and cared for me! I really felt this love. I went back to the doctors and the psychiatrist and told them I'd found what I needed.
This statement from Science and Health brought me daily assurance (p. 494): "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." My husband was frequently unemployed and we had huge medical bills. Often we were low on food supplies. I was pregnant with our third child, and had it not been for Christian Science, the whole situation would have looked hopeless. But with my newfound understanding I refused to be afraid. I knew Love was caring for all of us and I trusted in this Love. One evening neighbors invited us to have supper with them. The next day my aunt, a Christian Scientist, who knew nothing of our circumstances as we had not been in contact for a few years, drove a long distance to see me. She brought us three boxes of groceries and said, "I suddenly felt that you needed this." Indeed we did! She also brought me many issues of the Christian Science Sentinel.
