LOOKING BEYOND PERSONAL COMFORT

From the February 1981 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Do we ever try to use Christian Science merely as a tool for acquiring physical comfort, wealth, or personal success? Is this its real purpose? Or are we seeing the larger goal the Science of Truth holds for mankind?

As we seek to grow in our understanding of God and our love for man, it's important to keep a close check on our motives. The above questions are tough, but worth considering. The answers we give can reveal a great deal, not only about our own spiritual progress. We may find we can do more to meet the difficult challenges confronting humanity today. And the world's view of the Science of Christ often is determined by what is observed in the daily lives of individual Scientists.

Christ Jesus clearly discerned this all important element of Christian witnessing. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gave his followers a special, ongoing responsibility: "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."Matt. 5:16.For anyone longing to find the door out of a sense of mortal limitation, our expression of even one candlepower of Christly compassion and spiritual understanding can make all the difference.
