During my childhood Christian Science was a steadying influence—maintaining good health, contentment in our large family, and, best of all, companionship with Scientists whose lives were devoted to serving this healing Cause through their local branch Church of Christ, Scientist.
More than I realized at that time, these members' consistent, humble devotion to God and their living the teachings of Science in our community deeply affected my perspective on spiritual commitment. Through the example of their selflessness and that of my grandmother, who was a Christian Science practitioner, I early learned the importance of serving Church and the inevitable joy that follows.
When I was ready for college, there were no substantial family funds. Without any doubt though, I knew God was taking care of provision on all fronts. And He was. A generous music scholarship, employment on campus, and a position as organist amply met financial needs and kept me happily occupied.
