I had been married four years when I learned of Christian Science. At that time I felt that one child was enough for a couple; that it would be difficult to meet the expenses of a larger family. However, at my husband's insistence, I agreed to have another child. I had suffered a great deal during the first pregnancy, and during this second one things were much worse. Although I was having talks with a Christian Science practitioner, I was not practicing this religion because I was taking all kinds of medicine and vitamins for the pregnancy.
When the child was born, he was with me just a few hours, and then he passed away. That was when I really wanted a child. But with the help of some Christian Scientists, I put aside feelings of loss and began to prepare for another pregnancy. A year later I was expecting again, and the pregnancy was going well. But now something else was wrong. My husband's business was going from bad to worse. Then he was involved in an accident. Although my husband didn't suffer bodily harm, the accusations against him were grave.
My pregnancy was interrupted some days later. At first I rebelled against everything—even this marvelous Science. But then a dear friend showed me these words in the Christian Science Hymnal (No. 97):
