When Christian Science found me I was in a seemingly hopeless condition. I was afflicted with a severe form of arthritis, and all the material methods I had tried had failed to cure me. Finally I could move around only by means of a cane, sometimes two canes. The last physician to treat me told me that the development of the disease could not be stopped, and that finally there would be complete palsy. This medical verdict was crushing, especially for my wife. (We had been married for only six months.)
Though there seemed to be no way out of the situation, I refused to be dissuaded from my faith in God. I prayed every day, as a little child, "O Lord, let me become whole again." I did not know what God was at that time, save for the vague and false conceptions of Him I'd been educated to believe. Today I do know that when I prayed in my humble, trusting way, I was receptive to our all-loving Father-Mother God, who is forever blessing His children. The answer to my prayer came when a dear acquaintance brought me a copy of The Herald of Christian Science. After I had read the first paragraph of an article in the Herald, I thought, "This is the truth!" I was awed by the teaching of Christian Science that sickness and sin are unreal because God never created them. And with ardent zeal I was determined to be healed.
Since by that time I had been confined to bed, the woman who had brought me the Herald went to the Christian Science Reading Room and borrowed for me a copy of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I read the book and later bought a copy for myself, so that I could study the Bible Lessons as outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly. I also asked a Christian Science practitioner for treatment through prayer. After three months of prayer and study I was able to walk without a cane.
