The "extra" benefit

From the October 1983 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Recently, I considered more deeply what Christian Science is all about— especially the reasons why Christian Scientists choose not to go to hospitals and take medicine.

In the Science of Christianity we are looking for more than physical healing. Mrs. Eddy says of Christ Jesus in Science and Health, "His purpose in healing was not alone to restore health, but to demonstrate his divine Principle."Science and Health, p. 51. In another work she writes: "Healing physical sickness is the smallest part of Christian Science. It is only the bugle-call to thought and action, in the higher range of infinite goodness. The emphatic purpose of Christian Science is the healing of sin. . . ."Rudimental Divine Science, p. 2.

Thinking about this, I could see that in relying on God for physical healing, I was looking for something extra—something that would redeem me, make me a better person, bring to light my true identity as Spirit's likeness.
