Although my mother and aunt had been attending services in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, for many years, I found that I was unable to understand what I considered abstract terms when I had a brief exposure to Christian Science during my teens. It was only in later years, when I feared a possible life of invalidism, that I turned wholeheartedly to Science.
My difficulty had been diagnosed as a slipped disk. Having undergone several operations already, I panicked when I suspected that I might have to face another. I then asked my mother to call a Christian Science practitioner for me, which she did.
This dear practitioner visited me many times during the ensuing weeks and prayed for me daily. With her help I learned how to study the weekly Bible Lessons outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly and began reading the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I was deeply impressed by the thoughts communicated through this precious book. And no longer did I consider them abstract— rather they were vibrant with meaning! Like a thirsty traveler in a desert land, I drank in these spiritual truths. Upon finishing the book, I began to read it again from the beginning, so that I must have read it through three or four times.
