Some time ago an ad run by a metropolitan newspaper to promote home delivery of its morning edition caught my eye: "Get a head start on the world before you step out into it." The New York Times, November 1, 1981 .
I was reminded of what Mrs. Eddy told one of her household about her "head start" each day: "The first thing I do in the morning when I awake is to declare I shall have no other mind before divine Mind, and become fully conscious of this, and adhere to it throughout the entire day; then the evil cannot touch me." (Boston: The Christian Science Publishing Society, 1979), p. 173
Here is no ritual, but an enlightening, strengthening declaration of God's allness. How can one feel depression, distress, futility, upon waking if he acknowledges the allness of Mind, God? A prayer-filled consciousness does not play host to such feelings.
