Testimonies of Healing

When our son Dick was eight years...

From the July 1983 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When our son Dick was eight years old we were living in Dallas, Texas. As scorpions are a problem there, we were always very careful. But once at bedtime, Dick jumped up to get something, then screamed that he had stepped on a needle. When I got to his room I saw a scorpion racing across the floor. After disposing of it I called a Christian Science practitioner and asked for prayerful help. Sitting down on the bed with the boy, whose foot was swelling rapidly, I sang hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal to the boy—and to myself! He soon quieted down and went to sleep. In the morning he was entirely well—he could not even find the spot to show his father, who had not been home at the time.

One day, shortly after he had started school, this same son complained of not feeling well. Early next morning we were wakened by his call and tears. When I saw that he was covered with a rash, I telephoned a practitioner right away. He became delirious that afternoon so I called again. In about an hour he was fine and went to sleep for the night. The following morning he got up, had breakfast, and then dressed himself. The third day a doctor came by to look at the child, as a scarlet fever epidemic had been reported in the area. He thoroughly examined the lad and pronounced him well. We kept him home the rest of the week, but there was no recurrence of the difficulty.

A few months later our two boys were playing outside on a Sunday afternoon. I was lying on the sofa. Their dad stepped to the window to see how things were and suddenly yelled, "Watch out!" Then there was silence. I did not even stop to ask questions; I realized there had been an accident. I tore to the phone to call a practitioner. My husband carried Ken into the house and put him on the bed. (He had been hit by a car and thrown about fifteen feet.) The house was suddenly full of neighbors, one a doctor who offered to help. We thanked him but declined his services. Soon everyone left. Ken was not crying but seemed half-conscious. So I picked him up and sat in a rocker while his dad played and sang hymns. I do not know now how long it was before he began to stir, but he did and then smiled at us. He was quiet the rest of the evening, although he did eat dinner. He slept well that night and was all right the next day. There were no indications of injury.
