I am most grateful to attest to the probity of the testimony written by my husband.
We were attending the same Christian Science Sunday School when he had the experience with the fire, which resulted in burns that covered the greater part of both legs. In spite of the burns being severe, he was free from pain soon after he began praying for himself. I visited him often during this time, studying the Christian Science Quarterly Bible Lessons with him and reading aloud current issues of the Christian Science Sentinel. After several months, three of which he spent in bed, he returned to work, and that fall went to college, where he participated in many activities, including tennis.
At the time of our marriage four years later, the skin on one of his legs was such that the slightest bump would break open the area, causing a sore; this was apparently an aftermath of the burns. One Sunday after such an incident, part of his leg was particularly painful. My husband desired very much to attend church in spite of the difficulty, so we went. While we were sitting in church, I glanced over at him and saw that he had lost the natural color in his face. I whispered to him, "Listen to the lesson; it will heal you." As he did, the color returned to his face. Later he told me that the pain had left then, too. After that the wound closed and there was no more tenderness or unnatural breaking of the skin. He was completely free. The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany by Mrs. Eddy includes this statement (p. 249): "What our churches need is that devout, unselfed quality of thought which spiritualizes the congregation." This service did just that for us.
