Breaking the barriers of reserve

From the June 1985 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Most Christian Scientists know the happiness they feel when they are able to give something of their spiritual understanding of God to someone who is in need. "Happiness is spiritual, born of Truth and Love. It is unselfish; therefore it cannot exist alone, but requires all mankind to share it," Science and Health, p. 57. writes Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health.

Why, then, should we allow the barriers of reserve—whether called shyness, reticence, or timidity—to keep us from sharing the love and truth that will bless both others and ourselves?

There is, of course, a right expression of reserve that is an attractive aspect of true modesty; but when modesty is carried to the extreme of unwillingness to be ourselves, to share freely our understanding of Christian Science, we may be depriving someone of the very help he needs at that moment. Christ, Truth, touches mankind in infinite ways, and often our willing expression of it is the first way an individual becomes conscious of Christ.
